Taking a natural dye workshop is an amazing way to spend time connecting to your natural surroundings, learning a new skill, and creating something beautiful. I have found that former students don't look at the world with the same eyes, becoming more sensitive to the shapes and textures of the plants, their seasonal changes, and where we can find them. Whether you are a maker/artist looking to bring more natural materials into your practice, or someone who just needs some plant therapy, there is never a 'bad day' to play with plant colors.
My natural dye practice is based on interacting with the local landscape, so my approach to teaching is all about empowering you with fundamental information while giving you the freedom to explore and experiment. We work exclusively with local plants that you can forage or grow yourself and I maintain a plastic-free practice deeply committed to responsible resource management. I often tell my students, that just because it's natural doesn't make it sustainable.
As you look through the workshops below, please keep in mind that I teach several types of workshops:
- Introduction Workshops... are designed to be a first experience to the technique, allowing you to get a great idea of what it's all about and start doing. Introduction workshops are normally hosted by a 3rd party outside the studio, check out the workshops I do with GROOW or HortasLX.
- Fundamentals Workshops... are a much deeper immersion into the technique, learning multiple processes so you can have more diverse results.
- Experience Workshops... theory-free workshops where the goal is just to make something beautiful without needing to understand the theory or chemistry behind it. Check out Blooming Dyes or the Indigo Social for examples of these dynamic, super-fun workshops.
Once you've learned some basics, I want you to keep practicing and experimenting. I open my studio periodically to former students for Reunion Sessions, where you can apply what you've learned to your own projects in my fully equipped studio!
